In the end I reinstalled Fedora 16 on a newpartition. udev just fails to start but the boot sequence continues. Preferably without doing aclean install.I did a preupdate from Fedora 15 to Fedora 16 and now have a system thatonly boots into rescue mode after a long timeout. It seems to me that the udevd from initramfs is in fact killed, but nobody waits for it to actually die. have a peek at this web-site

Changing version to '11'. I booted with init=/bin/sh, waited a bit, and then ran "exec /sbin/init". Maybe indeed some timing? 'udevd' was killed, eventually but long before I had a chance to check, only not to be restarted. have a peek here Or this indeed may happen?
In case it matters, this system uses LVM-on-crypto for the root filesystem and swap.
